Acupuncture for reproductive health and infertility

Becoming pregnant is often not as easy or straight forward as we feel it should be, sometimes there are clear medical reasons and sometimes there are none.

Increasingly couples are also choosing to start their family later in life and when this is combined with the pressures of modern life the chances of conceiving are further reduced.

Research has shown that acupuncture can help improve the chances of conceiving naturally. It can also be beneficial when combined with IVF and ICSI.

Self-help measures

The earlier you can start to prepare your body for conception the better and below are some examples of what you can do in addition to having acupuncture to improve your chances of conceiving and maintaining a healthy pregnancy.

Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. Avoid processed food as much as possible and increase your intake of essential vitamins and minerals.

Drink between one and two litres of water a day

Reduce alcohol consumption as much as possible as it can reduce folic acid absorption.

Try and go to bed at a regular time to help regulate your sleep pattern.

Take some regular exercise.

Stop smoking.

Research

Previous studies have proved the effectiveness

of acupuncture for infertility.

1. A 2008 study published in the British Medical Journal found that acupuncture given with embryo transfer can improve rates of pregnancy by 65% in women undergoing in vitro fertilisation (IVF).

2. A 2005 study conducted by Shanghai University in China found that acupuncture also helped treat male infertility. Of the men who participated, those who had acupuncture had an increased percentage of sperm in their semen; their sperm structure and morphology was also healthier than their counterparts who did not undergo acupuncture infertility treatment.

3. A 2004 study conducted by the Reproductive Medicine and Fertility Center in Colorado found that 51% of women who underwent both IVF and acupuncture treatment at the same time became pregnant, while only 36% of those who only underwent IVF did. The latter group also had higher rates of miscarriage and stillbirth (20%) compared to those women who had received acupuncture (8%).

4. A report published in the journal Fertility and Sterility (2002) found the pregnancy rate in the group receiving acupuncture group was 42.5%, compared to the group which did not receive the therapy, where the rate was 26.3%.

Embryo transfer

Research has shown that having acupuncture before and after embryo transfer, can improve the chance of a successful implantation. Ideally this should be carried out as near to the time of transfer as possible and because of this weekend appointments for this can be offered.
