Traditional Chinese Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a branch of Traditional Chinese medicine, its philosophy is that our health is dependent on the body's motivating energy known as Qi, moving in a smooth and harmonious way throughout a series of channels (meridians) beneath the skin. When the Qi is unbalanced we are more susceptible to illness. The flow of Qi can be unsettled by a number of factors, emotional and physical. These include anger, anxiety, grief, stress, diet, trauma and hereditary factors.

By inserting ultra-fine needles at specific points on the body the Qi can be stimulated to restore its natural balance. The principle aim of acupuncture is to treat the root cause of the condition as well as the symptoms.

Increasingly women are choosing to have acupuncture to support them throughout pregnancy, labour and after giving birth. Many people experiencing infertility problems are also choosing to have acupuncture to support them through IVF treatment.

Frequently asked questions about acupuncture.

What conditions can acupuncture treat?

Many people have acupuncture to help with specific symptoms or conditions such as osteoarthritis of the knee, Nausea, non-specific lower back pain and headaches. Others choose to have treatment to help maintain good health, as a preventative measure and to improve their general sense of well being.

It can also be used alongside conventional medicine in the treatment of both acute and chronic disease. As with any therapy, the response to acupuncture can vary from one person to another.

You can get more information on current scientific research into the effectiveness of acupuncture by visiting www.acupuncture.org.uk or by phoning Justine directly.

What is a treatment like?

Your first appointment will be longer than any subsequent sessions as I will need to assess your general state of health. I will ask about your current symptoms and if you have received any other treatment so far, your medical history and that of your close family, your diet. digestive system, sleeping patterns and emotional state. To discover how the Qi is flowing in your body, I will feel your pulses on both wrists and look at your tongue.

All of these details will help me plan your treatment and select the most appropriate points to use. In some cases, I may also include some massage or warm the needles with a smouldering herb known as moxa.

What does it feel like?

Acupuncture needles are much finer than those used for having a blood test or an injection. When the needles are inserted you may feel a slight prick and then a tingling sensation or dull ache all of which will only last for a few seconds. Once all of the needles are inserted it's not uncommon for people to totally relax and some even fall asleep.

How long do the needles stay in for?

Most often between twenty and thirty minutes.

Is it safe?

Yes, all the needles are sterile and come in sealed packs. The needles are only used once and are disposed of immediately after use.

How will I feel after the treatment?

You may feel rather relaxed and calm. If the treatment has been particularly strong you could feel quite tired or drowsy for a few hours, and you should take this into account if you are planning to drive or use machinery. Occasionally there may be a short-term flair-up of your symptoms as your qi clears and resettles itself.

Should I tell my doctor?

If you are receiving treatment from your doctor then it is sensible to mention that you plan to have acupuncture. The acupuncture treatment may enable you to reduce or even stop taking some forms of medication, but you should always consult your doctor regarding any change of prescription. Your acupuncturist needs to know about any medication you are taking as this may affect your response to the acupuncture treatment.

Should I continue with my prescribed medication while undergoing a course of acupuncture treatment?

Yes, at least until you have discussed this with your doctor or the practitioner who prescribed the medication. Many people seek the help of an acupuncturist because of dissatisfaction with drug treatment, because it does not seem to be working or because the side effects are unacceptable. DO NOT stop taking any medication without professional guidance.

How often will I need a treatment?

In traditional acupuncture philosophy each person is considered as unique, and therefore the number of treatments required depends on the individual. Most people have a course of treatments and notice the difference after four to six sessions.

Most people have one or two treatments a week to start with although some conditions may need less frequent attention.
